If you know me, you know that I have been a Puppy Raiser for Canine Companions for Independence since 2014 having raised 4 puppies so far. I say so far because I’m not done yet.
What you may not know is that Canine Companions provides highly training assistance dogs and support FREE OF CHARGE to those who have physical or developmental disabilities:
• Since founded in July 1975, 5,753 graduate teams have been placed
• There are currently 2,305 active graduate teams nationwide
• There are currently 1,302 puppies currently being raised
• There are currently 123 breeder dogs living in California
The training facility, The Miller Family Campus in Medford Long Island, New York, is celebrating its 10 year anniversary and with that comes the ‘aches and pains’ of an aging infrastructure as well as a need to expand the current buildings, kennels, and dormitories in order to meet the growing need for these skilled dogs.
As a non-profit organization, Canine Companions is funded by private contributions from individuals; gifts from businesses, civic groups and service clubs; grants from corporations and foundations; and ongoing fundraising activities.
This brings me to this particular fund raising event. The Old Dominion Chapter of Puppy Raisers, Graduates, and Volunteers are looking to raise $10,000 in honor of The Miller Campus’ 10th Anniversary. I have charged myself with a personal goal of 10% or $1000.00.
